Missouri: Votes still coming in regarding sports betting amendment

One county finished its tally and added nearly 10,000 votes.
Key Points
- No local races were affected by the additional votes
- The vote count was postponed to protect voter data
Though the election has been over for more than two weeks, one Missouri county has just wrapped up counting its votes, according to a KCTV local news report.
The Christian County clerk recently added 9,800 votes to its previously submitted certified total. The additional votes tallied came from mail-in, absentee and provisional ballots.
Residents statewide recently cast ballots and pulled the lever in favor of Amendment 2, a constitutional amendment that would welcome legal and regulated sports betting.
This brings the state one step closer to opening a commercial market and would make Missouri the 39th state to welcome legal sports wagering.
Clerk Paula Brumfield had postponed the count on election night because shutting down the machines that night to count votes “would have erased all of the ballot data.”
She said, “We did not report those results because we didn’t expect a high turnout in the office, and we were running out of machines.
“We just did not have another machine to feed those provisional and those military in, so we had to keep those machines open to be able to feed them to be counted.”
Good to know: However, voters said no to Amendment 5, which would have allowed a new casino in the Lake of the Ozarks area
Brumfield went on to note that the decision to postpone the count “was made with the agreement of the Republican and Democratic party representatives in the office.”
However, Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft disagreed with the decision.
He said, “Those numbers could have been reported on election night. They should have been reported on election night.”
The number of registered voters in the county is 68,453. Brumfield told locals news that Christian County voter turnout reached 75%.
She commented, “We knew we would be busy, but we just had high volumes coming through the doors.”
