Voters in Colorado approve Proposition JJ ballot measure

This allows the state to use excess sports betting tax revenue for conservation projects.
Key Points
- Voters said yes to the ballot measure by more than 75%
- Tax revenue beyond $29m will go toward water conservation and projects
Voters in Colorado voted in favor of the state keeping and spending all sports betting tax revenue it collects, even if it exceeds $29m, according to a Denver Business Journal local report.
Close to 76% of voters statewide pulled the lever in favor of Proposition JJ, with 63% of the vote counted, the local report said.
The ballot measure’s wording said that the state would transfer funds “in excess of $29m annually” to Colorado’s water conservation and protection projects.
Yes on JJ Campaign Co-Chair Brian Jackson shared his enthusiasm regarding the elections results with local news in a statement, “With Proposition JJ, we have secured a stable, sustainable funding source for the projects that safeguard our water for future generations.
“This is a victory for everyone who values Colorado and wants a resilient water future for our state.”
Group Co-Chair and Colorado Cattlemen’s Association Executive VP Erin Karney commented, “Together, we’ve taken a huge step forward in securing a water future that benefits all Coloradans and maintains our agricultural and outdoor heritage.”
Good to know: Colorado approved a legal sports betting market in 2019
To date, 38 states and the District of Columbia have legalized sports betting within their territories since the US Supreme Court lifted the federal ban on sports wagering more than six years ago.
Projected results from last night’s election in Missouri show that the state could join this group as the next state to open a legal sport wagering market.
Voters in Arkansas have approved Issue 2 during yesterday’s election, according to an Arkansas Democrat Gazette local report.
The ballot initiative sought to revoke a casino license issued in Pope County by the Arkansas Racing Commission. Issue 2 also required future casino license approvals to be determined by voters in “special countywide elections.”
