Missouri: St. Louis Democratic Central Committee voices opposition to legalized sports betting

The group said it supports all other city and statewide ballot questions.
Key Points
- Voters will have a say on whether the state welcomes legal sports wagering
- Those opposed are concerned problem gambling resources will not have enough funding
As the election nears, the St. Louis City Democratic Central Committee has agreed to support state and city ballot questions addressed to voters except for Amendment 2, according to a Spectrum News local report.
Amendment 2 addresses whether the state of Missouri will welcome sports betting within its borders.
The Attorney General candidate Elad Gross has also pushed back against the proposal because of concern that a legalized sports betting market might not generate enough tax revenue to fund problem gambling resources, the local report said.
Winning for Missouri Education has supported Amendment 2 and maintains that making room for a sports wagering market could bring in funding for education around the state.
Missouri’s current law allows the Gaming Commission to distribute gaming 13 licenses. However, these can only go to gaming facilities that are located on the Missouri River and Mississippi River.
Good to know: Should voters say yes to statewide sports betting, Missouri will join the more than 35 states with open and regulated sports wagering markets
However, the committee is not the only organization that has questioned if opening the market is a good idea for Missouri.
The Missourians Against the Deceptive Online Gambling Amendment has also voiced concerns regarding the amendment.
After weeks of debate regarding whether a petition to put the issue on the upcoming ballot was valid, Missouri Judge Daniel Green, a Circuit Court Judge in Cole County recently struck down an attempt to invalidate the petition.
This gave Missouri voters a chance to pull the lever next month in favor of a legal sports betting market.
In addition to legalized sports betting, voters will have a say in whether a new casino is welcome near Lake of the Ozarks.
