Tribal gaming regulators host webinar to address gray market… and sweepstakes

Tribal regulators recently came together to hold an online educational webinar session called “The New Normal: California’s Gray Market Invasion: Sweepstakes Gambling & DFS 2.0.”
California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA) Chairman James Silva, Indian Gaming Association Conference Chairman Victor Rocha and Indian Gaming Association Executive Director Jason Giles released a joint statement in a social media post that explained the motivation behind hosting this event.
They commented, “As sweepstakes gambling and Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) 2.0 continue to exploit legal loopholes, California’s tribal gaming industry is under increasing pressure from these unregulated and untaxed operations.
“This session is essential for tribes, gaming professionals, regulators and policymakers who want to understand why California tribes are taking a stand to shut down sweepstakes gambling and DFS 2.0.”
The latest episode of New Normal discussed “gray market” activities and examined the potential risks for customers. The discussion also addressed what impact the gray market can have on Tribal gaming and the broader implications.

In other Tribal gaming news, leaders met during a G2E educational breakout session in Las Vegas last week to address the topic of Tribal sovereignty in sports betting.
Representatives from California, Washington State, Minnesota and Oklahoma headed up the panel and discussed sovereignty, collaboration, unity and legal challenges Tribes have faced when it comes to regulating sports betting markets in their states.
The panelist included California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA) Chairman the Morongo Band of Mission Indians Vice Chairman James Siva, Washington Indian Gaming Association Executive Director Rebecca George, Minnesota Indian Gaming Association Executive Director Andy Platto and OIGA Chairman Matthew Morgan.
