Massachusetts regulator discusses BetMGM non-compliance violations

A recent audit found three more violations.
Key Points
- Violations were found through an external audit of BetMGM’s sportsbook
- The Commission wants to deal with all violations in a single hearing
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) recently held a meeting to discuss new non-compliance violations discovered during BetMGM’s external audit.
MGC discussed these discoveries and decided to handle all violations presented during a single judiciary hearing.
The operator hired GLI to conduct an audit of its books after BetMGM had allowed prop bets on college football and professional soccer games.
Prop betting is currently illegal under Massachusetts law. The state has not yet approved a Glory Kickboxing wagering market.
The investigation revealed that BetMGM accepted 41 additional college-player props on college football, as well as 13 college-player props on two men’s NCAA games.
Good to know: A total of 15.482 wagers made in violation of Massachusetts statute
Bets on the NCAA games totaled $469.10, the Commission said.
BetMGM also accepted 12 player prop wagers on two NCAA women’s basketball that totaled $208.34 and 106 wagers on a Glory Kickboxing events in June. Wagers on those events totaled $576.82.
Prop bets involve wagers on how many rebounds or points a basketball player could have or the number of touchdowns or yards that football players might have. With prop bets, players bet on these game aspects “instead of or in conjunction with a game’s outcome or spread.”
The Commission has not set a date for the hearing.
Since the Federal Government lifted its ban on legal sports betting, following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) six years ago, 38 states and the District of Columbia have established legal and regulated sports betting markets.
