North Carolina State Lottery Commission announces pari-mutuel wagering update
A launch date has not been determined yet.
The North Carolina State Lottery Commission recently received an update regarding pari-mutuel horserace wagering.
The update included the next step in implementing these wagers and includes “a rulemaking process to set specific requirements for pari-mutuel online and mobile wagering operations.”
However, the state said it does not have a projected launch date as of now.
The regulator said in a statement, “the Commission and staff continue to carefully work through the process efficiently and responsibly.”
The commission has allowed a time for public comment, which will be available to residents online until 11:59PM October 19.
Those who wish to offer comments in person can come speak during a public comment session at 9AM on 8 October at the North Carolina State Lottery Commission Headquarters in Raleigh.
Along with getting an update on pari-mutuel betting, the Commission met and approved the necessary requirements to open a Place of Public Accommodation for sports betting and new guidance on esports.
The approval guidelines “outline the process to open a permanent in-person sports wagering facility and the requirements that must be met by an operator,” the Commission said.
North Carolina opened its legal and regulated sports betting market in March. Last month, players throughout the state placed more than $370.4m in bets.
North Carolina players took home $333.7m in winnings during August.
Promo wagering revenue last month totaled almost $13.2m. The state posted a total of $33.7m in gross wagering revenue during August.
Sports betting last month contributed close to $6.1m in taxes to the state.
To date, 38 states and the District of Columbia have legalized sports wagering since the US Supreme Court overturned the federal ban in 2018.
