Culinary Union Local 226 files complaint over unfair labor practices at Evolution
The Las Vegas-based Union released a statement from an Evolution worker in the Republic of Georgia describing the workplace conditions.
Following reports of 5,000 workers choosing to strike over unfair labor practices at Evolution Gaming’s (Evolution) office in the Republic of Georgia, NI-Gaming and UNITE-HERE Culinary Local 226 in Las Vegas filed a complaint with the Nevada Gaming Commission in solidarity with the workers.
As part of the complaint, the Union also released a testimony from one of the workers who chose to walk off the job in Georgia on July 12, sent directly to Gaming America.
“Hello, my name is Nanuka Abramishvili, and I’ve been working as a shuffler at Evolution Gaming in the Republic of Georgia for over two years. I’m a single mother, and I work at least 22 nights each month just to survive. The job has become more demanding and stressful, yet my hourly pay has only increased by 20 cents since I started. When I joined, I earned $1.23 per hour. After two years, I earn $1.45 per hour,” Abramishvili said.
“Because of poor cleaning, there are insects in the studio, which have caused workers to get scabies, lice or other illnesses. As a single mother, I am terrified of getting sick, there would be no one to take care of my daughter.”
Evolution recently acquired Galaxy Gaming, furthering its reach in the US online gambling market and working with customers including DraftKings, Poker Kings and Hard Rock Casino.
“Because of these abuses, and because of Evolution’s unwillingness to bargain in good faith even with mediation, we were forced to start a strike on July 12. Now more than 40 days have passed with no response from Evolution. They call us enemies of the company and say we are ruining Evolution. But the truth is, we just want to work under fair conditions and earn enough to live, not just survive,” Abramishvili continued to say in her testimony.
“As Evolution Gaming expands its operations in the US and Nevada through the acquisition of Galaxy Gaming, we ask the Nevada Gaming Commission to review and investigate the poor working conditions and continued lack of respect for its workers in the Republic of Georgia whose appearances would potentially be broadcast in Nevada as they consider allowing Evolution to receive a Nevada gaming license.”
The acquisition of Galaxy Gaming was made in hopes to continue Evolution’s strategy of being a top provider of casino games and supplying its customers with quality gaming content.
With Galaxy Gaming’s portfolio, Evolution will look to solidify its presence in the US market and enhance its position as a licensor of proprietary table games to the online gaming industry.
