Maryland gambling contributes $1.58bn to good causes in FY2024
The state reported its second-largest single-year transfer to date.
The Maryland Lottery has reported that the state’s casino, daily fantasy sports (DFS) and sportsbook operators have contributed nearly $1.58bn to Maryland’s charitable causes during the fiscal year.
The state said this is the second-largest contribution total to date, nearly topping last year’s nearly $1.6bn figure.
In a breakdown of this year’s charitable contribution, casinos generated $824m of the combined total.
Lottery profits reached $699.6m, while sports wagering and DFS contributed a combined total of $61.3m.
Currently, Maryland’s sportsbooks contribute 15% of all taxable wins to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund.
Retail sports betting has been legal in the state of Maryland since 2021. The state opened its online sports wagering market in 2022.
Maryland has 13 mobile sportsbooks and 12 retail sportsbook locations.
Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin took a moment to celebrate this year’s total charitable contributions.
He commented, “We had an exceptional performance in Fiscal Year 2023, so we came into FY2024 facing a challenging year-over-year comparison.
“Nonetheless, we had another strong year on a number of fronts. The Lottery added a new daily game, and the sports wagering market continued to expand. We’re proud of our role in generating funds for important state programs.”
The state lottery recently released Cash Pop, its latest draw game.
In other state news, The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Commission (MLGCC) recently granted Bally’s Interactive Maryland a mobile sports betting license to operate its Bally Bet Sportsbook statewide.
The approval follows a recent successful controlled demonstration of Bally Bet Sportsbook, the company’s mobile wagering platform.
