Fanatics fined $15,000 by MGC for unlawful parlay bet

One of the four legs of the parlay involved a Massachusetts college basketball team.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has announced its decision to fine Fanatics Betting and Gaming $15,000 for taking a low-stake parlay bet that included an in-state college basketball game. The Massachusetts regulator has stated its sports betting rules prohibit any wagering on in-state college teams outside of NCAA tournament play.
The Commission stated in its meeting on July 11 that Fanatics accepted a parlay bet of only $2 towards the end of last year. One of the four legs of this parlay involved a Massachusetts team not playing in a tournament game, although the mistake was identified before the game started and that the offending leg of the parlay was canceled.
The MGC Investigations and Enforcement Bureau notified the MGC about the illegal parlay on February 1. The Bureau suggested a fine of $15,000 after it concluded an investigation into the matter. Investigations and Enforcement Bureau Director Caitlin Monahan said Fanatics worked with the Commission throughout the process and accepted the fine willingly.
This is not the first time the MGC has fined Fanatics, however, as the company received a $10,000 penalty for accepting a wager on a game involving Boston College University.
The commission outlined the specifics of Fanatics’ violation during a meeting on May 24 and said that the sportsbook took a bet from a customer in December 2023 when Boston College played Southern Methodist University during the Wasabi Fenway Bowl.
Fanatics told the MGC that the option to allow wagering on the game was mistakenly turned on by a new employee. Fanatics noticed the bet and self-reported the incident.
