MLB umpire Pat Hoberg disciplined for violation of gambling rules
Hoberg has not umpired a game this season.
Major League Baseball (MLB) has disciplined umpire Pat Hoberg for being in violation of the league’s gambling rules.
Hoberg hasn’t umpired a game all season long, although he is said to have appealed the disciplinary decision handed to him by MLB, with the exact nature of it as-of-yet unknown.
Hoberg has been a full-time MLB umpire since 2017, working seven postseason series, including his first World Series in 2022.
This news comes after the MLB recently handed a lifetime ban to San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano for betting on baseball, with four other players of the sport being handed one-year suspensions each for betting on MLB games.
Also, Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter Ippei Mizuhara pleaded guilty over allegedly stealing nearly $17m from the baseball player to pay off sports gambling debts.
In a statement to reporters, the MLB said: “During this year’s Spring Training, Major League Baseball commenced an investigation regarding a potential violation of MLB’s sports betting policies by umpire Pat Hoberg.
“Mr. Hoberg was removed from the field during the pendency of that investigation. While MLB’s investigation did not find any evidence that games worked by Mr. Hoberg were compromised or manipulated in any way, MLB determined that discipline was warranted. Mr. Hoberg has chosen to appeal that determination.
“Therefore, we cannot comment further until the appeal process is concluded.”
Recent months have also seen sports betting scandals in other sports, with Jontay Porter of the Toronto Raptors, for example, being handed a lifetime ban from the NBA after he was found to have violated rules disclosing confidential information to sports bettors.
