Norte de Santander gaming contributes COP$8.12bn in first half of 2024 to public health
However, illegal games throughout the region last year generated nearly the same amount.
Colombian regulator Coljuegos has released a report that outlines financial activity of both legal and illegal games throughout the region.
The report revealed that, in 2024 so far, gaming in Norte de Santander has contributed COP$8.12bn (US$2.1m) to the public health system and social project development, but that illegal games stopped the transfer of nearly COP$8bn to health last year.
In a breakdown of this COP$8bn total, nearly COP$3bn came from the ‘white’ chance, another COP$2.5bn from unauthorized raffles, COP$1.7bn from illegal sports wagers, COP$747m from clandestine casinos and COP$303m from keno.
Coljuegos President Marco Emilio Hincapié took a moment to discuss the regulator’s game plan to combat illegal gambling throughout the region.
He commented, “We are fighting illegality throughout the national territory. We cannot allow unauthorized betting to continue to fund criminal structures.
“For this reason, we are working hand in hand with operators and authorities to continue protecting health transfers.”
President Hincapié has also taken a public stand against allowing keno operations throughout Colombia. The President issued a statement, saying that “keno is an illegal game and its operation is prohibited in the country.”
There are no current regulations for the game in force in the country. However, Hincapié noted that a group is working on putting together some regulatory provisions that could allow the market to offer keno to Colombian players.
Coljuegos serves Colombia as its regulatory body for games and luck and chance.
