Sports betting in Vermont: State handle totals $17m for April

Vermont’s liquor and lottery department has released its sports betting results from April. During the month, the state posted total sports betting handle of $17m.
Almost 738,000 April bets were placed in Vermont, with the average wager amounting to $23.15.
Players from neighboring states had a hand last month in helping Vermont reach the $17m mark. Out-of-state players accounted for nearly a fifth of all wagers placed in April and bet a total of close to $3.5m.
They also placed higher bets on average than players who are Vermont residents. The average bet per out-of-state player was $30.56.
Following the trend of several other US states during the month of April, Vermont sports bettors went home with significant earnings after placing their bets.
Players around the state walked away in April with more than $15m in winnings, while Vermont’s operators posted almost $1.7m in adjusted gross sports wagering revenue.
During April, players bet more on basketball than any other event. Basketball wagers accounted for nearly $6.1m of the state’s total sports wagering handle.
Another $5.1m was bet on various other sports not including baseball, tennis, hockey or soccer.
Baseball ranked second for largest wagers placed on a specific sport during April. However, players bet less than half the total wagered on basketball games. Baseball generated a $2.9m handle last month.
Tennis, hockey and soccer contributed $1.6m, $634,985 and $602,570 to last month’s total handle respectively.
More than 35 states have established legal and regulated sports betting markets since the US Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA) in May 2018, also known as the Bradley Act.
