NCAA President Baker voices concerns regarding collegiate sports prop betting

He believes recognizing potential issues early on is important.

NCAA president Charlie Baker has pointed out the attention given to prop betting during the NCAA women’s championship game, according to a recent Forbes report.

The former Massachusetts Governor and NCAA leader described prop betting as a trend that is “enormously problematic.”

Prop bets involve wagers on how many rebounds or points a basketball player could have or the number of touchdowns or yards that football players might have. With prop bets, players bet on these game aspects “instead of or in conjunction with a game’s outcome or spread.”

Prior to the UConn and Purdue men’s game, Baker took a moment to comment on the rising interest in prop betting.

He told reporters, “The prop betting piece is enormously problematic for the student-athletes, and I’ve had a lot of them say that to me. We’re in the top of the first inning on this one, and I think it is really important for us to recognize that this is going to be a challenging issue.

“We really need to take seriously the fact that student-athletes generally are surrounded by a huge percentage of their classmates and their schoolmates who bet on sports. When we hear them talking to us about some of the noise they are getting on prop betting, we need to do something about it.”

Several US states have done just that. Louisiana recently issued a ban a statewide ban from prop betting on college athletes through licensed sportsbooks will take effect this summer.

Colorado, Arizona, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Oregon have put regulations in place to restrict prop betting. Maryland, Ohio and Vermont have also recently banned props betting on college sports.

Other states, including Illinois, Connecticut and Iowa prohibit props betting for in-state teams.
