Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville Says Voters Should Have Say In Legalized Gambling

Senator Tommy Tuberville believes Alabama voters should have a say in the state’s decision to legalize gambling.
Tommy Tuberville Talks Gambling Legalization in Alabama
Tuberville has declared his intentions to run for the Alabama gubernatorial election in 2026. Tuberville, a Republican candidate, is deemed the favorite to win.
One of the hot-button topics in Alabama is gambling legalization. Alabama is one of five states that do not have a lottery. Also, Alabama does not have legalized sports betting.
Where does Tuberville stand on gambling? The former Auburn and Texas Tech football coach shared his thoughts on FM Talk 106.5’s The Jeff Poor Show. If elected governor, Tuberville will explain gambling and its impact on the state to his constituents. He believes it’s his responsibility to inform, not decide. Ultimately, the voters, not Tuberville, should have the final say on gambling in the state of Alabama.
“Well, I mean, again, I hear people say they want a lottery, they want both a lottery and gambling, they want a sportsbook, they want horse racing, dog racing, all this,” Tuberville said on The Jeff Poor Show. “Again, it all goes back to one thing: do your study, do your due diligence, sell the good on both sides to the people in Alabama. I think that’s what a governor should do. Hey, this is what’s going to be good about it. This is what’s going to be bad about it. And then let people vote on it, give them an opportunity.”
The Status of Gambling in Alabama
Alabama has some of the most restrictive laws in the country when it comes to gambling. For something like the lottery to occur, it would need to be an amendment to the state’s constitution.
As for casinos, Alabama has fewer than five in the state, with three sitting on Native American lands.
Whether the state changes its gambling laws is unknown. Tuberville says he hears about this issue constantly from Alabama residents, which is why he favors a referendum on the matter.
“And again, I think that would satisfy a lot of people over the years. I know, living in the state for over 25 years, I hear more about that than anything,” Tuberville said. “But one thing you have to go back and look at now — iPhones and computers have really taken a lot of money away from a lot of these states that have gambling because it’s legal to gamble now.
“It’s legal to gamble online and using your phone and making these bets for, I don’t know, I can’t even think of some of these names that have these online betting services. But it’s, you know, the big tech has caused things to really excel, and if you want to find a way to gamble, you can pretty much do it.”
