VictoryLand, a casino located in Macon County Alabama, has officially been banned from offering electronic bingo at its facility after a Circuit Court ruling. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has released a statement saying VictoryLand’s provision and operation of the bingo machines was illegal.
The case of the State of Alabama v. Epic Tech Inc, has been contentious since last fall, when the Alabama Supreme Court ruled against not only VictoryLand, but other local casinos.
Marshall’s statement said, “The Circuit Court granted the State of Alabama’s request to permanently enjoin and prohibit the casinos from offering so-called ‘electronic bingo’ machines at VictoryLand.”
The Macon County Sheriff will now also be banned from issuing bingo licenses and receiving associated funds. This resolution will prohibit the operation of illegal bingo machines in Macon County, but the outcome of one further case in Greene County is still pending.
Five cases against the devices were originally filed in 2017 in Macon, Greene, Morgan, Houston and Lowndes Counties. In 2019, Marshall’s office also took legal action against 14 gambling facilities in Jefferson County, as well as recently executed search warrants in April this year, which resulted in temporary restraining orders.
Marshall’s statement continued, “Electronic bingo machines are a blatant violation of state law, and the Alabama Supreme Court has reaffirmed this time and time again.
“Similar to the facilities in Morgan, Houston and Lowndes Counties, the Macon County facilities are permanently prohibited from using electronic bingo machines moving forward.”
Under Alabama Law, Marshall stated he has been able to ‘shut down illegal gambling operations as illegal nuisances.’ The casino currently still offers simulcast greyhound racing and horseracing.
