The celebration includes highlighting Black voices, stressing the historical accomplishments of African Americans and contemporary difficulties.

San Diego has been invited to join the Jamul Indian Village of California (JIV) Tribe and Jamul Casino in observing Black History Month, a time to honor the rich history, culture and contributions of African Americans.

The JIV and Jamul Casino are joining the celebration by highlighting Black voices, stressing the significance of the historical accomplishments of African Americans, as well as contemporary difficulties, through a number of events and activities planned throughout February.

Erica M. Pinto, Chairwoman of the Jamul Indian Village and Chairwoman of the JIVDC Board, said: "This month, we acknowledge and appreciate the historical contributions of the Black community while also recognizing the role and impact of the systemic barriers to racial equality that still exist today.”

The Jamul Casino has donated $10,000 to Many Shades of Pink, a group that aids African American breast cancer patients with resources and assistance.

Dr. Suzanne Afflalo and Wendy Shurelds, the Founder and CEO of Many Shades of Pink, were honored on February 4 at Jamul Casino. These women are devoted to improving healthcare for African Americans.

Among other recent accomplishments, Jamul Casino is showcasing 31 significant figures on its social media pages and on digital screens during the month of February. Both historical and current Black American leaders are highlighted.

President and General Manager of Jamul Casino, Mary Cheeks, said: "Jamul Casino's Black History Month initiatives provide an opportunity to acknowledge and honor the sacrifices and struggles of Black people who have played a vital role in shaping the United States of America.

“We're excited to recognize the African American community's contributions to our culture, and be part of creating a brighter, richer, more inclusive future for the next generation."
