Gun Lake Casino’s owner and operator, Michigan’s Gun Lake Tribe, has installed the SBT bin tipper from Power Knot LLC. Gun Lake is the first indigenous US Tribe to install a bin tipper on its land.
Power Knot specializes in onsite organic waste management solutions. Its SBT bin tipper, The SBT-140, is comprised of stainless steel and can hold up to 35 gallons of food waste. The unit is waterproof, can fit through standard doorways and is fully powered by battery.
Gun Lake Tribe Environmental Specialist Shawn McKenney said the new addition will aid the Tribe in transporting food waste in a safer and more effective way.
He commented: "The SBT bin tipper helps us safely and effectively transport food waste from the Harvest Buffet to the biodigester. It is lightweight, mobile, and has helped process over 1600lb of food waste."
Gun Lake Tribe said it “strives to protect their lands and resources on Grandmother Earth for the next seven generations.” Through the use of the bin tipper, Gun Lake hopes to “greatly reduce methane emissions by diverting food waste from the landfill.”
The Match-E-Be-Nash-She-Wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians of Michigan make up the Gun Lake Tribe. Its ancestors first signed treaties with the US in 1795. The federal government currently recognizes Gun Lake as a sovereign government within the state of Michigan.
Gun Lake has been a federally recognized tribe since 1999 when the government reaffirmed its status.
Gun Lake Casino has contributed more than $2.8bn to Michigan’s economy since its opening.
