The Kansas Lottery has released its first-ever revenue report for legal sports betting, accounting for the month of September. Total revenue generated $1.3m, with $326,147 coming from mobile betting revenue and Kansas state collected $129,617 in taxes.
This is a good start for the Sunflower State when compared to some other recent launches. For instance, Arizona grossed $392,418 in revenue in its first month of launching – September 2021 – despite being 83% more populated.
Kansas has a 10% tax rate on total gambling, the same as its neighboring state Colorado, but far below New York’s 51% tax rate. The funds collected are still substantial and will be distributed across a variety of state programs, such as gambling addiction assistance.
BetKansas.com betting analyst Dru James commented: “Kansas is off to an explosive start in the sports betting market. Proportioned to population size, the Sunflower State is doing well compared to other recent launches. It's expected that there will be continued rapid growth in revenue through the end of the year, and perhaps up until the Super Bowl, before stabilizing next spring.
“As the market develops and strengthens, Kansas will start to see the material benefits of legalized sports betting, even if they don't personally partake."
Kansas Lottery executive director Stephen Durrell said September’s betting data demonstrates where Sunflower State can go now that it’s come online in a timely fashion, at the onset of the new NFL season.
Durrell commented “Sports betting has successfully kicked off in Kansas, and players could not be more excited to get in on the action. The launch went smoothly thanks to the efforts of our casino partners, the sports wagering platforms, the KRGC, and our staff at the Kansas Lottery.
“We will continue to work to make sports betting in Kansas safe, secure, and fun for all players as we expand and grow.”
