The Redding Rancheria has responded to a recent Shasta County Superior Court ruling in its suit against the city of Redding, California. The court ruled in favor of the Redding Rancheria, which had filed a lawsuit against the city to stop the sale of South Behcilli Lane to Shasta Land Holdings, LLC.
The ruling stated that because the city took 11 days to sell a property that would block access Bechelli Lane to tribe-owned land in order to build a casino, it failed to comply with its procedures, processes and relevant law.
Redding Rancheria Director of Public Relations Maria Orozco said in a written statement: "While the Redding Rancheria is pleased with the ruling, the Redding Rancheria is also disappointed in the facts underlying this entire transaction and the lack of overall transparency.”
Orozco went on to add that both tribal and state governments need to work in tandem for the benefit of everyone in the community.
She said: "This conduct was reminiscent of the historic mistreatment of tribes by federal, state, and local governments. Moving forward, the tribe and city must work together on a government-to-government basis for the good of the community.”
Orozco also stressed the importance of the court laying out the groundwork for making things right.
She concluded by saying: "The next step, in this case, is the remedy phase where the court will have to determine how to right this wrong. At the advice of legal counsel, the Redding Rancheria will have no further comment in this matter until the remedy phase is complete."
