Super Bowl LVI is set to take place this Sunday, with the Los Angeles Rams to take on the Cincinnati Bengals. This 56th annual footballing clash will see Americans wager far more than ever before according to the American Gaming Association (AGA).
AGA research suggests that 31.4 million American adults are set to place a bet on the big game, a 35% increase from last year's numbers. Moreover, bettors are likely to wager a hefty $7.61bn this Super Bowl Sunday, a $3.33bn increase from the previous year.
The AGA President and CEO, Bill Miller, is anticipating a huge day for sports betting across the country.
“The results are clear: Americans have never been more interested in legal sports wagering. The growth of legal options across the country not only protects fans and the integrity of games and bets, but also puts illegal operators on notice that their time is limited,” he said.
A breakdown of the numbers reveals that 18.2 million United States’ citizens will make traditional bets, marking a 78% increase in volume. Furthermore, 18.5 million will place casual bets with friends or as part of a pool.
According to the AGA’s research, 76% of bettors feel it is important to wager with a legal operator. This number is an 11% increase over last year.
Sports betting has grown at an astonishing rate since 2018, 106 million Americans, almost half the population, recall seeing the activity advertised in the last 12 months.
Presently, sports betting is live and legal in 30 states, as well as the Washington DC. Since last year’s NFL Championship, the number of people able to legally bet has grown in a big way. Indeed, in the last year, Arizona, Connecticut, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming have launched legal sports betting.
