The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has appointed Steve Burns as its Chief Public Policy Officer. Per this new appointment, Burns will utilize his extensive experience to lead and implement the Tribe’s federal and statewide public policy strategy.
Moreover, Burns will work to implement San Manuel’s stance on regulation, issues management, ballot initiatives, land use, and the effects of government policy on the Tribe.
“Steve is joining San Manuel at a time of exceptional growth and opportunities for the Tribe,” noted Rikki Tanenbaum, Chief Operating Officer for the Tribe.
“He brings a deep background in both federal and state government relations, as well as many years in policy development and campaign management. His experience will help advance the Tribe’s interests into the future.”
Previously, Burns has overseen public affairs counseling and issues management at Mercury Public Affairs, which has recently been renamed Actum. He has also held the position of Executive Vice President and Managing Director for Burson Cohn & Wolfe.
In December of 2021, the Nevada Gaming Commission cleared the way for the San Manuel tribe to own and operate the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas, making it the first tribal operator to own a property in the city.
“It’s such an honor to reach this milestone today. As we forge ahead, it's important we bring forward the strong values and culture of the Tribe into everything we do at the property,” said Cynthia Kiser Murphey, General Manager of Palms.
“From team member culture to exceptional guest service, it's our intent to create a lively and fun environment not only for customers but our dedicated staff as well.”
With sports betting and iGaming rapidly spreading across the United States, Burns’ skills could be utilized to further increase the influence of tribal gaming across this ever-growing market.
