Google updates sports betting ad policy to include New York

The company will now accept and run New York sports betting ads.

Google has updated its gambling and games policy this month. Now New York has been added to the list of states that are able to submit sports betting ads to be run through Google. Advertising like this was previously forbidden, but now that the state Gaming Commission in New York changed the rule, it is now allowed in New York state.

The change was confirmed by the New York State Gaming Commission and went into effect on January 8, 2022 at 9am.

The change was the result of legislation that has legalized sports betting in New York state. Currently, there are about 30 states where sports betting is now legal, including 18 that allow online sports wagering. This means more than 100 million Americans can place a legal wager where they live.

“In January 2022, the Google Ads Gambling and games policy United States country-specifics will be updated. We will begin to accept and run ads for sports betting from certified, state-licensed entities in New York from January 8,” Google announced in an online statement the company posted.

New York state lawmakers and former Governor Andrew Cuomo cleared the way for mobile gambling last April, when it was included as part of the state budget. This was done to bring in more tax dollars to the state.

This is approved for four apps right now, which include DraftKings Sportsbook, FanDuel, Caesars Sportsbook and BetRivers. BallyBet, BetMGM, Wynn Interactive, Resorts World Bet and PointsBet are still awaiting final approval.

Google stated that advertisers must apply for certification. Applications for certification are now open to advertisers who wish to promote online gambling content in this region. This started on January 7, 2022.

The ad and policy page was updated when the policy went into effect.
