South Dakota has launched sports betting in time for the NFL season, with BetMGM becoming the first operator to accept wagers in the state.

South Dakota’s sports betting rules allow retail and on-premise mobile wagering.

BetMGM is one of three sports betting providers to receive licenses in South Dakota. The others are Internet Sports International (ISI) and International Game Technology (IGT).

BetMGM will offer retail sports betting at Tin Lizzie Gaming Resort and Cadillac Jack’s Gaming Resort through a partnership with Liv Hospitality. South Dakota marks the 16th state in which BetMGM is available.

"Liv Hospitality's prime resort locations in Deadwood make it an ideal partner for us. Together, we look forward to bringing the BetMGM sports betting experience to South Dakota sports fans," said Adam Greenblatt, BetMGM CEO.

The BetMGM app will be available within both Tin Lizzie and Cadillac Jack’s in the near future, the company said.

ISI is launching retail sports betting at Mustang Sally’s and Gold Dust Casino, while IGT and Deadwood Moutain Grand are expected to begin accepting wagers in the coming weeks.

South Dakota voters approved sports betting at the ballot box last November. The Mount Rushmore State is the third to launch sports betting in September, joining its southwestern neighbor Wyoming and Arizona, which also launched on Thursday.

South Dakota operators will pay a 9% tax rate on sports betting revenue.
