Powerball jackpot run generates more than $79m for New York during historic draw period

The New York Lottery has confirmed that the recent Powerball jackpot run generated more than $79m for the state, with proceeds directed toward public education funding and retailer commissions.
The announcement follows a $1.8bn Powerball jackpot that was ultimately won in Arkansas on Christmas Eve.
The jackpot began rolling on September 8 and lasted for 47 consecutive drawings through December 24. During that period, Powerball ticket sales in New York State totaled $194.2m.
Under the state constitution, all Lottery profits are dedicated to K-12 public education, resulting in $68m in Lottery Aid to Education generated during the jackpot run. Retailers across the state earned a further $11.7m in commissions from ticket sales.
Brian O’Dwyer, Chair of the New York State Gaming Commission, said: “New York’s public schools and lottery retailers always win big when massive jackpots build.”
O’Dwyer added that the excitement translated into tangible returns for the state, noting that nearly 100 high-value winning tickets were sold in New York during the run.
Although the top prize was claimed outside New York, the state recorded substantial prize activity. Retailers sold $36m in winning Powerball tickets between September and December. In total, 99 prizes worth at least $50,000 were sold in New York during the rollup period.
Those prizes included 11 $1m second-prize winners, one $200,000 Power Play third-prize winner, two $150,000 Power Play third-prize winners, 12 $100,000 Power Play third-prize winners, and 73 $50,000 third-prize winners.
The New York Lottery said the results underline the breadth of participation and the distribution of returns across communities statewide.
The Lottery continues to play a significant role in New York’s public funding landscape. For fiscal year 2024-25, the New York Lottery is expected to contribute $3.6bn in aid to education, maintaining its position as the largest and most profitable lottery in North America.
Lottery funding forms part of a wider framework of gaming-related revenue in New York. In October 2025, Resorts World New York City projected contributions of up to $2.5bn to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority over four years, alongside additional funding earmarked for public education and racing interests, highlighting the growing fiscal impact of regulated gaming across the state.
