Buenos Aires lawmaker pushes bill to block gambling sites in schools
Belén Malaisi’s proposal seeks to restrict access to betting and gaming platforms amid concern over youth gambling addiction.
A Buenos Aires Province legislator, in Argentina, is pushing for legislation that would restrict access to online betting sites and gaming platforms in schools as “youth gambling addiction rates increase.”
Belén Malaisi, a member of the Radical Civic Union party, called for the bill’s treatment during the sixth ordinary session of the Chamber of Deputies but failed to secure enough votes to advance it.
Malaisi said, “I expected that today we could have achieved its treatment, because it does not imply a budgetary expenditure. I hope we can reach the last session of the year with the missing opinion so that this approval happens.”
The initiative received approval from the Education Committee, where it was unified with a project by legislator Martín Rozas from the Unión y Libertad bloc to expand internet restrictions to online gaming sites and adult content.
Malaisi said the problem of compulsive gambling in schools has increased to the point where measures are necessary to limit the practice among young people. The bill proposes modifying an article of the provincial Education Law to require internet providers to implement filtering systems to restrict access to content inappropriate for educational settings.
The legislation now awaits treatment in the General Legislation Committee and the Constitutional Affairs and Justice Committee.
A separate unified text supported by multiple political blocs to combat gambling addiction remains pending in the Buenos Aires Legislature. That bill proposes modifications to the Gaming Law, creation of awareness and prevention programs, regulation of online betting and technological inclusion to eliminate youth participation.
