La Plata Racetrack to host Gran Premio Dardo Rocha following major facility upgrades
The event at La Plata Racetrack will take place on November 19 as part of the city’s anniversary celebrations.
The Buenos Aires Provincial Lottery and Casinos Institute (IPLyC) will host the Gran Premio Dardo Rocha at La Plata Racetrack on November 19, featuring more than ARS720m ($700,000) in total prize money.
The main race, scheduled for 7pm, is classified as an international event and awards ARS150m to the winner. The program also includes 17 additional races, among them the Clásico Joaquín V. González, with ARS50m for first place, and the Clásico Ciudad de La Plata, which offers ARS40m.
Admission will be free to the public as part of La Plata City’s anniversary festivities. Activities will begin at midday with Handicap, a gastronomy and local culture event featuring more than 20 food and beverage vendors.
Live music and cultural performances will accompany the racing program. The Penitentiary Service band will perform the national anthem before the main race, with singer Jorge Vázquez providing the vocals.
The IPLyC, led by President Gonzalo Atanasof, has carried out a modernization program at the La Plata Racetrack over the past two years, in coordination with the venue’s administration under Mariano Cowen. The initiative seeks to restore the facility’s historical role in provincial horse racing and reposition it as a year-round public venue for sports, culture and gastronomy.
Completed improvements include LED track lighting, full renovation of the Popular Tribune, upgrades to the 116 Street entrance and ticket offices, modernization of IT systems, renewal of veterinary services, leveling of the main track, and the operation of a new laboratory.
The upgrades form part of the institute’s broader strategy to strengthen Buenos Aires Province’s racing infrastructure while diversifying racetrack use beyond traditional events.
The development positions La Plata Racetrack as a multipurpose venue supporting both sporting and cultural activities for residents and visitors.
