Key Points
- New York’s state sports wagering handle has risen 32.4% to $2.29bn
- Casino wagering also saw a year-on-year increase of 3.2% to $57.6m
- Sports wagering revenue decreased by 4.9% from last September, with casino GGR falling month-over-month
The New York State Gaming Commission (NYGC) has unveiled the state’s wagering statistics for the month of September 2025, highlighting a $2.29bn sports wagering handle alongside an overall casino GGR of $57.6m.
Overall, New York’s September 2025 sports wagering handle reached $2.287bn, approximately, representing a 32.4% year-on-year increase. Despite this, revenue generated by that figure dropped by 4.9% in comparison to results from the year prior, settling at $193.8m during the month.
Elsewhere, casino GGR saw a positive upswing of 3.2% when compared to results from September 2024, with slots remaining the primary revenue driver in the Empire State.
Sports wagering
Regarding sports wagering specifically, September marked the return of sports season, with the NFL’s opening game week coming at the beginning of the month. This factor has, in turn, led to the highest sports wagering handle recorded in New York since March 2025 – marking the fourth time the state’s monthly handle has exceeded the $2.2bn mark during 2025.
Further, month-over-month, sports wagering handle and revenues have risen by 11.4% and 8.4%, respectively. However, September 2025’s $193.8m sports betting GGR figure is representative of a 4.9% decrease in comparison to results from the prior year – with net revenue to platform providers also falling from $100.3m in September 2024 to $94.9m this September.
Nevertheless, with six often lucrative months of the fiscal remaining for the New York State sports betting industry, cumulative handle and revenue figures look set to exceed that of the year prior, currently resting at $11.7bn and $1.18bn, respectively.
Casino results
Elsewhere, the state’s retail casino industry enjoyed a healthy revenue upswing of 3.2%, overall, spurred on by a slot and ETG GGR of $40.7m – up 3.5% compared to last September’s results. Table game revenues also rose by 6.1%, reaching $15.2m, with poker revenues also increasing by 5.9% to $822,836 and retail sports wagering revenues decreasing by 37% year-on-year.
Good to know: Last week, the NYGC announced it would be making a final decision on the remaining NYC casino licensee candidates
Despite several positive upswings compared to last September, New York’s overall casino revenue when compared to results from the month prior – August 2025 – are down by 11.9%. For the fiscal year so far, cumulative casino GGR currently sits at $358m.
Last month, Hard Rock’s proposed NYC Metropolitan Park Hotel & Casin project also received unanimously approval from the city’s Community Advisory Committee. Prior to this development, in June, New York state also motioned to outlaw sweepstakes, with SB5035 advancing to Governor Hochul’s office.
