Ontario outlaws mandatory purchase of charitable lottery tickets

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has announced that the mandatory purchase of charitable lottery products is no longer permitted in the province.  

This change encompasses all charitable lottery products, including raffle tickets, break open tickets and others, regardless of if the sale is as a condition of registration for a service or program. As stated by the commission, this decision and subsequent announcement have been made in support of licensing authorities and charitable gaming licensees in Ontario, who can find the relevant guidelines now included in the updated Lottery Licence Policy Manuel (LLPM).  

Now, any organizations in the province that do not currently require mandatory ticket purchases is not permitted to introduce them – with all the above alterations now effective immediately. Indeed, the AGCO has stated that “this action aligns with the AGCO’s mandate to regulate in accordance with the principles of honesty and integrity, and in the public interest.”  

Good to know: Earlier this week, the AGCO announced the removal of over 50 illegal electronic gaming machines across Ontario over the course of the summer 

Elsewhere in the province, the AGCO also revoked lottery registrations tied to un-regulated gambling machines in July, specifically targeting machines in the Greater Toronto area branded under the name Prime Slot.  

Across the border in Georgia, it was also announced last month that the state lottery would incorporate SCiQ Technology in its retail operations.
