Mendoza enforces cap on slot machines with new law

The provincial Government has promulgated a law that restricts the number of slot machines allowed in casinos, with strict penalties for violations.

The Government of Mendoza has enacted Law 9652, which imposes strict limits on the number of slot machines operating in the province’s casinos. 

The law prohibits any expansion beyond the historical maximum number of slot machines already authorized in each venue. 

The Provincial Institute of Games and Casinos will act as the enforcement authority, with powers not only to monitor compliance but also to reduce machine numbers in current contracts if deemed necessary.

Casinos are also required to implement responsible gambling programmes under the new framework. 

Obligations include placing visible information about gambling risks, providing tax-free assistance lines and training staff so they’ll be able to identify signs of problematic behavior among players.

Sanctions for non-compliance are severe, as penalties may include fines of up to 20% of a venue’s average monthly revenue, temporary suspensions of operations or, in cases of repeated breaches, the permanent revocation of a license.

Any machines installed in excess of the authorised limit will be subject to confiscation.

The legislation reflects Mendoza’s broader effort to balance gaming activity with social safeguards, particularly around problem gambling.

The province has previously introduced measures aimed at enhancing oversight of the sector and ensuring greater alignment between operators and public policy objectives.
