Maryland sports wagering handle eclipses $400m in June 2025

Maryland Lottery and Gaming has reported the state’s sports wagering activity throughout June 2025, as operators reported a total handle of $403.8m between retail and mobile betting, equating to an increase of 5% from the prior year period.
Sports wagering was able to contribute just over $9.2m to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which goes toward supporting public education programs, representing an increase of 61.1% year-over-year. Throughout fiscal year (FY) 2025, running from July 2024 through June 2025, the offering contributed over $88.9m to the fund, rising by 47.4% from the prior year period.
June 2025 handle was primarily generated by mobile wagering, which accounted for $396.2m of the monthly total while retail betting made up the remaining $7.7m, representing an increase of 6.1% year-over-year for online betting but a fall of 32% for its land-based counterpart.
Throughout the month, operators paid out a combined $346.7m of winnings to online and retail players, creating a hold percentage of 14.1% for sportsbooks currently conducting business within Maryland, and a total revenue of just over $57.1m.

In Maryland, revenue generated by operators from land-based operations are taxed at a rate of 15%, while online betting witnesses a tax rate of 20%, with sports wagering having contributed a total of nearly $177.4m to the education fund since its inception in December 2021.
Sports wagering has also managed to contribute over $4.5m to the state’s Problem Gaming Fund, as Maryland Lottery and Gaming reported 5% of all online proceeds will be directed toward the state’s General Fund beginning in July.
