Maryland sports betting contributes $7.7m to public education in May

Maryland’s sports wagering market brought in $7.7m for the state in May 2025, marking its fifth-best monthly performance since legalisation. The amount pushes the FY2025 total contribution to nearly $79.7m compared to the $54.6m collected during the same period in the previous fiscal year.
All proceeds are directed to the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund, which is a state initiative that supports public education programmes.
In total, Marylanders wagered just over $504m in May. Of that, $494m came from mobile platforms and $10.2m from retail sportsbooks. Operators returned $438.1m in prizes and held 13.1% of the handle.
Mobile sports betting accounted for the biggest share of contribution, generating $7.58m, while retail sportsbooks added $161,425. The state had 11 mobile platforms and 12 retail locations operating throughout the month.
Good to know: The results follow a strong showing in April, when Maryland reported handle of $513.7m. Maryland’s casino revenue is also on the rise, with May bringing in $176.4m, which indicates a 1.9% increase
According to the Maryland Lottery and Gaming, the regulator overseeing sports betting in the state, cumulative contributions since the launch of the programme in December 2021 have now surpassed $168m.
An additional $4.26m from expired prizes has gone toward the Problem Gambling Fund.
