During the GAT Expo 2025 in Cartagena, Marco Emilio Hincapié, President of Coljuegos, announced that the gambling sector has produced COP 2.4tn ($610m) in funding for Colombia’s subsidised health system over the past two years. The amount represents 33% of total contributions from the sector since 2012.
According to Coljuegos, the industry’s growth has been largely fuelled by the rise of online gambling platforms and they report that based only in the first quarter of 2025 alone, internet-based games contributed COP 118.5bn to public health funding.
Legal gambling operators also contributed an estimated COP 147.5bn in VAT payments during the same period. These funds were allocated by the Colombian Government to support peace and development initiatives in local territories.
Good to know: Coljuegos also reported that players deposited COP 638.4bn into authorised gambling platforms between January and March 2025 representing a 10.69% increase compared to the same period in 2024
President Hincapié credited the positive performance to regulatory reforms, anti-illegal gambling efforts and advancements in technology, which he said have helped stabilise the industry.
The update was presented to more than 200 industry representatives from across Latin America, including Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.
