Public Health Advocacy Institute reacts to NCAA gambling data sale

Key Points
- The NCAA made a deal with Genius sports to sell gambling data to various sportsbooks
- Leaders of the PHAI believe this deal will further harm student athletes
The Public Health Advocacy Institute (PHAI) has released a response to a recent National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) sale involving sportsbooks.
The NCAA recently decided to sell gambling data to sportsbooks through an agreement with Genius Sports. This sale could pave the way for the gambling industry to offer AI-driven wagering on college sports, as well as provide micro-betting options.
Under the terms of the deal, the two will sell real-time sports data to the gaming industry, a move the PHAI said “has unfortunately placed money and profits over public health and the safety of student-athletes.”
PHAI Director of Gambling Policy Dr. Harry Levant expressed concern over the agreement and the potential risks involved.
He commented, “The NCAA has increased the risk of harm. People will now wager on virtually everything that college players do in each game. To justify this, the NCAA claims the money from selling data will fund education programs.
“This is the equivalent of the tobacco industry offering the non-stop sale of cigarettes and then using the revenue to fund education programs. The justification offered by the NCAA is disingenuous at best.”
PHAI Executive Director Mark Gottlieb described the decision to sell data as a missed opportunity for the NCAA.
Her further explained, “The NCAA, unfortunately, missed an opportunity to take a leadership position in the burgeoning movement to bring comprehensive public health reform to the gambling industry. The public health movement is focused on regulating gambling as an addictive product.
“Unfortunately, the NCAA chose to take gambling industry money, which will result in increased high-intensity micro-betting, with it, addiction, and serious harm to players, their families and the public.”
