Argentinian influencer investigated for promoting illegal betting sites

Cinthia Fernández, an Argentinian dancer and influencer, will be investigated over the promotion of illegal betting sites through her social media, where she holds more than six million followers.
On May 14, Fernández is expected to testify before Juan Rozas, the Prosecutor leading the investigation conducted by the Specialized Gambling Prosecutor’s Office of the Buenos Aires Public Prosecutor’s Office.
According to La Nación, a leading Argentinian newspaper, she’s being questioned for “the promotion of illegal betting systems through social media.”
The sources, consulted by the newspaper, stated, “The case was initiated after detecting posts promoting gaming platforms that are not authorized to operate in the city of Buenos Aires or in any jurisdiction of the country, which constitutes a clear violation of article 301 bis of the Penal Code.”
She is also accused of undermining the responsible gaming message that influencers are required to convey through their platforms. Approximately a week ago, she recorded herself reading alleged messages from followers thanking her for having earned money due to her promotion, which violates Law 6330. This law aims to prevent pathological gambling in the City of Buenos Aires
In the video, she said, “There is something I want to thank you for because it made me very emotional. I’m receiving a lot of messages about something that started as a game and ended up being very positive. People who are playing are winning, and will be able to pay this month’s bills; that’s a lot for me, and I want to thank you very much. I hope you keep going and keep winning.”
