BCLC issues warning against online casino scams
Players are cautioned to watch out for deceptive social media posts.

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) recently published a warning for players in the Canadian province to be careful when it comes to social media platforms that are posing as casinos.
The BCLC released the warning due to “a series of social media scams that imitate B.C. casinos and trick individuals into providing their financial details on illegitimate websites.”
The regulator said in a statement, “Highly deceptive, these scams share fraudulent posts and advertisements exploiting the logos, names and exterior images of local B.C. casinos, and may claim to offer players exclusive bonuses and promotions if they register with their website or mobile application. BCLC warns that none of these sites are associated with casinos in B.C. or BCLC.”
BCLC has only authorized PlayNow.com to function as an online gambling operator for players throughout the province. The regulator listed its official apps as well on its website, which include BCLC Lotto!, PlayNow Poker BC and PlayNow BC Sportsbook.
“All BCLC-operated social media accounts, such as BCLC, PlayNow BC, PlayNow Sports, Lotto BC and Casinos BC, are verified with a checkmark,” the regulator said.
In addition to cautioning players, the BCLC gave tips explaining how to spot suspicious posts.
The regulator encouraged players to verify company information before giving out personal information, checking URLs to confirm websites are legitimate and look out for site that tell winners that prizes would be taxed (because prizes won in Canada are not subject to taxes).
