Churchill Downs opens $100m HHR venue in Kentucky

Churchill Downs has officially opened Owensboro Racing & Gaming in western Kentucky, which will serve as a historical horseracing (HHR) and entertainment venue while supporting funding for Ellis Park Racing and Gaming’s summer meet in Henderson, Kentucky.
“Today marks an exciting milestone for our company as we expand our footprint in western Kentucky and further strengthen our commonwealth’s signature horse racing industry,” Churchill Downs CEO Bill Carstanjen said.
“Owensboro’s newest entertainment destination will drive new tourism, entertainment and economic opportunities in eastern Daviess County.”
Owensboro Racing & Gaming represents the seventh HHR entertainment venue that Churchill Downs has launched in Kentucky and cost $100m to construct.
The venue features 600 historical racing machines (HRMs), a retail sportsbook, simulcast wagering and multiple food & beverage options for guests.

The launch comes shortly after Churchill Downs announced that it would stop accepting wagers at its Louisville track due to “low profitability from retail operations.”
The company also stated that “98% of sports betting occurs on mobile platforms like FanDuel and DraftKings, making it unfeasible to continue retail betting.”
Despite the suspension of taking bets, Churchill Downs was recently issued customary approving licenses by the Virginia Racing Commission, the New York State Gaming Commission and the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission.
