Culinary Workers Union Local 226, the Bartenders Union and Virgin Hotels Las Vegas have reached a deal regarding a new contract for union employees.
The parties said in a joint statement, “Virgin Hotels Las Vegas and the Culinary Workers Union Local 226 and Bartenders Union Local 165 have come to an agreement on the terms upon which they are prepared to settle their new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
“Virgin Hotels Las Vegas and the Culinary and Bartenders Unions are pleased to be moving past their contract negotiations as each looks forward to fostering a positive and collaborative working relationship for the benefit of all team members at the property.”
The parties went on to say that they “are committed to the resolution of our dispute and to maintaining a union standard at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas that provides for its team members’ families and fosters a better community for all.”
The previous contract between Virgin Hotels Las Vegas and the union expired nearly two years ago. Attempts to negotiate a new contract have not gone smoothly in recent months.
The culinary union held a two-day strike in May. More than 700 members of the state’s largest labor union left the job site to pressure the resort to give the green light on a five-year contract regarding benefits and wages.
Good to know:This agreement follows several months of conflict between the union and the resort
By November, an agreement still had not been reached. In response, the Culinary Union declared an open-ended strike. More than 700 workers who are represented by both Culinary and Bartenders unions walked off the job as a result.
This was the first open-ended strike the group had conducted in 22 years.
Guest room attendants, cocktail and food servers, porters, bellmen, cooks, bartenders and kitchen workers participated in the strike.
During the last several months, the Culinary Union has successfully negotiated new contracts with other casino resorts throughout Las Vegas, including MGM, Caesars and Wynn.
