Gift Responsibly campaign achieves record global support

Throughout December, participating organizations will work to educate local communities about the dangers of gifting lottery tickets to children.

Key points:

- For the seventh consecutive year, 100% of eligible US and Canadian lotteries have signed on to the campaign

- 19 international lotteries and numerous community organizations will also participate in Gift Responsibly

The National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) has announced that 74 lotteries and 101 community organizations worldwide have signed up to participate in the 2024 Gift Responsibly campaign.

For the seventh consecutive year, 100% of eligible US and Canadian lotteries have signed on to the campaign. The lotteries will be joined by 19 international lotteries and numerous community organizations to expand the reach of educational messaging.

“This year’s record participation is a heartwarming way to enter the holiday season as we continue our work to educate the public about the dangers of underage gambling,” NCPG Executive Director Keith Whyte said.

“The Gift Responsibly Campaign promotes global awareness and understanding that lottery tickets are not appropriate gifts for children or teens. I applaud and thank the numerous lotteries and community organizations who have joined the campaign for the first time or have reaffirmed their support in 2024. While our communities, languages and legal gambling ages may differ, one message is always consistent: Lottery tickets are not for kids.”

Throughout December, participating organizations will work to educate local communities about the dangers of gifting lottery tickets to children, raise awareness about the risks of youth gambling and promote responsible gambling practices for those of legal age who choose to gamble.

Good to know: The NCPG awarded $320k in Agility Grant funding to eight organizations that are working to “establish and strengthen” local problem gambling prevention efforts on November 7

The campaign offers a variety of participation levels for lotteries, who participate in an increasing volume of campaign activities throughout the holiday season.

According to the NCPG, research shows that the earlier the participation or exposure to gambling in childhood, the more likely a person is to develop a gambling problem later in life.

The Council also stated that gambling exposure during childhood is often through a lottery product given by an adult likely unaware of the associated risks, such as lottery tickets or scratchers.

The Gift Responsibly campaign is supported by the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries.
