NBA reportedly moves ahead with prop betting restrictions

The league made deals with several major sportsbooks to cease offering under bets on NBA-contracted players.
Key Points
- Under bets will not be available for two-way and 10-day contracted NBA athletes
- Many states have restricted or banned proposition betting
The NBA has entered agreements with major sportsbooks to cease offering proposition bets on league players, according to a recent report in The Athletic.
The NBA agreement involves several known operators, including FanDuel, DraftKings and BetMGM. Per the conditions, “under” bets will not be offered on players that have 10-day or two-way contracts.
A spokesperson from the NBA told The Athletic that the organization’s actions are an effort to protect game integrity.
The spokesperson further commented, “We are pleased that these actions have been taken to help protect the integrity of our games.”
The decision follows the recent expulsion of former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter and “months of discussion” between the NBA and its gambling partners.
Prior to his dismissal from the NBA, Porter played center for the Raptors. The NBA began looking into prop bet abnormalities surrounding the player last spring.
Examples of proposition bets include placing wagers on how many rebounds or points a basketball player could have or the number of touchdowns or yards that football players might have.
With prop bets, players bet on these game aspects “instead of or in conjunction with a game’s outcome or spread.”
Good to know: Along with the NBA, several states have addressed the issue of prop betting and have put restrictions in place
The state of Louisiana issued a ban on the practice in August. Lawmakers in New York recently proposed a bill to ban prop betting as well.
Colorado, Arizona, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Oregon have put regulations in place to restrict prop betting. Maryland, Ohio and Vermont have also recently banned prop betting on college sports.
Other states, including Illinois, Connecticut and Iowa prohibit proposition betting for in-state teams.
