Key Points
- The proposed Cedar Rapids casino project has pledged to donate 8% of its net adjusted revenue to local non-profits, the highest such commitment in Iowa
- Local non-profit leaders are supporting the project, citing the potential for significant annual contributions amidst challenging economic times
- A public hearing is scheduled for 20 November, where non-profit organizations are expected to voice their continued support for the casino project
The proposed Cedar Crossing casino and entertainment center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, is gaining momentum with support from local non-profit organizations.
The Linn County Gaming Association, the organization spearheading the project, has pledged to donate 8% of the casino’s net adjusted revenue to area non-profits, a commitment that has attracted attention from community leaders.
At a recent gathering in Cedar Rapids, representatives from over half a dozen local non-profit organizations voiced their support for the casino project.
Commenting on the pledge, Kristin Roberts of the United Way of East Central Iowa, stated: “That is the highest commitment in the state of any gaming operation. It would translate to 6.3 million dollars annually.
“In Iowa, one third of Iowans are working and unable to make ends meet. In Linn County it’s 25%. Unfortunately, in the last couple years, with the pandemic, the derecho, the near recession that everyone has talked about, our non-profit sector is stretched beyond it’s non -profit capabilities.”
Todd Bergen, Secretary and Treasurer of the Linn County Gaming Association, added to these comments and shared his perspective on the importance of non-profts, stating: “They don’t always get the press and the visibility they deserve, but they serve a crucial purpose in the community.
“What I’ve found out through my experience is, in all cases, they need more funding. This project provides a remarkable opportunity to increase the funding available to non profits.”
The next step for the Cedar Crossing project is a public hearing scheduled for 20 November, where non-profit leaders are expected to reiterate their support for the casino.
If approved, the project promises to be a major source of funding for local charitable organizations.
