Brazil to pitch proposal to stop online betting with social benefits

The proposal is scheduled for presentation next week.
Brazil’s Social Development Ministry has announced that a proposal will be presented “by next week” that would prohibit the use of social benefits as a payment method for online gambling, according to a Reuters report.
Bolsa Familia provides direct cash transfers to low-income households throughout the region and has been functioning for more than two decades. The organization is led by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
According to data provided by the central bank, five million people sent close to three billion reais as payments to online gambling companies during August. Funds were transferred through the Pix payment platforms with a median expenditure that totaled 100 reais per person.
Brazil’s Social Development Minister Wellington Dias put out a video statement to journalists that outlined the terms of the proposal.
He commented, “We are working on alternatives. One of them is a zero limit on the use of social benefits, like Bolsa Familia, for gambling or betting.
“And we are considering a control mechanism based on tax ID numbers to implement the necessary measures.”
Brazil is scheduled to open its regulated gaming market January 1 2025.
The country’s bet management system has received 121 applications, according to its website.
LOTERJ recently decided to reopen the application window for betting accreditation due to “high demand for regularization” in the State of Rio de Janeiro.
The new deadline ran from September 5 to September 20, giving businesses a 15-day window to file applications.
More than 100 applications were filed for iGaming licenses in Brazil during the previous August 20 deadline, following the establishment of ordinance 1,207, a document that lays out the rules and regulations for fixed-odds betting operators.
