Wyoming regulator meets to discuss prop betting

The Wyoming Gaming Commission (WGC) has addressed the effect prop bets have had on collegiate players during a recent meeting. The group described prop betting as “harassment of student athletes.”
During the meeting, the Commission noted that both the NCAA and the University of Wyoming “have both expressed concerns with the harassment of student athletes.” Concerns were raised that instituting a total ban could potentially drive gambling back to the illegal market.
Prop bets involve wagers on how many rebounds or points a basketball player could have or the number of touchdowns or yards that football players might have. With prop bets, players bet on these game aspects “instead of or in conjunction with a game’s outcome or spread.”
Among several public responses was a letter submitted by WGC Operations Manager Michael Steinberg, which proposed two types of way to ban prop betting.
Steinberg explained both possible solutions. The state could take the approach of banning prop betting across the board, regardless of where the colleges are located, or prohibiting these types of wagers on in-state college players.
“We all agree that harassment of student athletes is bad and something that should not be tolerated,” Steinberg wrote. “The question then becomes, is banning prop bets going to eliminate the harassment of athletes?”
Though the Commission did not come to a decision on what to do, the group decided to continue looking into the matter.
The controversy surrounding prop betting is not exclusive to Wyoming. US states have decided to shut the door on these types of wagers. Louisiana recently issued a ban a statewide ban from prop betting on college athletes through licensed sportsbooks will take effect this summer.
Colorado, Arizona, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania and Oregon have put regulations in place to restrict prop betting. Maryland, Ohio and Vermont have also recently banned props betting on college sports.
Other states, including Illinois, Connecticut and Iowa prohibit props betting for in-state teams.
