Aristocrat, Light & Wonder Reach $127.5 Million Settlement in IP Dispute

Aristocrat Leisure Limited and Light & Wonder have reached a major settlement in their long-running legal dispute over alleged misuse of proprietary gaming technology.
The pending lawsuits in Australia and the United States centered on Aristocrat’s claims that Light & Wonder’s Dragon Train and Jewel of the Dragon titles were developed using Aristocrat trade secrets and copyrighted mathematical algorithms.
Settlement Details and Terms
Under the agreement, Light & Wonder will compensate Aristocrat USD $127.5 million for the alleged infringement. The company has also acknowledged that Aristocrat math data played a role in creating both games.
As part of the settlement, Light & Wonder will permanently stop distributing Dragon Train and Jewel of the Dragon at online casinos worldwide. The company must also make efforts to remove existing installations at land-based casinos. Light & Wonder has also agreed to stop any further use of Aristocrat’s math information and destroy all documents containing the data.
The settlement also sets up confidential procedures to address any remaining questions regarding Aristocrat math in current and upcoming Light & Wonder “hold and spin” games. With this agreement, all pending claims by Aristocrat in both Australia and the United States are dismissed.
Aristocrat and Light & Wonder CEOs Speak Out
Both operators acknowledged the importance of fair competition and the significant investment that goes into driving innovation in a joint statement.
Aristocrat CEO and Managing Director Trevor Croker said:
“Aristocrat welcomes fair competition but will always robustly defend and enforce its intellectual property rights. As an ideas and innovation company, our intellectual property is vital to our ongoing success. We welcome this positive outcome, which includes significant financial compensation and follows the decisive action we took to ensure the preservation of Aristocrat’s valuable intellectual property assets.”
Light & Wonder CEO Matt Wilson added:
“Light & Wonder is pleased to resolve this matter and move forward. We are firmly committed to doing business the right way—respecting our competitors’ intellectual property rights while protecting our own. This settlement protects the interests of our customers, employees, and shareholders and allows us to focus on developing and delivering the market-leading content our customers expect—without distraction or disruption.”
The settlement is another reminder of how high the stakes are in casino gaming innovation. Even industry leaders face costly IP disputes and they’re prepared to defend their proprietary math at all costs.
