Maryland casinos post $153.2m in January revenue

Maryland Lottery and Gaming has published its January casino revenue results. Last month, the state’s six casinos generated a combined revenue total of $153.2m from slot machines and table games.

However, January’s casino revenue reflected an 8.4% decline when compared to results from a year ago.

Out of the state’s six privately owned casinos, MGM National Harbor took the lead last month with the largest January revenue. The casino contributed more than $66m to the combined total. Live! Casino & Hotel and Horseshow Casino grabbed the second and third place spots, pitching in $56.8m and $14.6m respectively.

During January, Hollywood Casino brought in $6.6m in revenue, while Ocean Downs Casino generated nearly $6.1m. Rocky Gap Casino ended last month with $3.2m in revenue.

All six casinos reported declines in revenue when compared to results from January 2023. Rocky Gap Casino posted the largest decrease in activity year-over-year, with revenue falling by 36.6%.

Gaming contributions to the state also fell last month. Maryland’s casinos paid close to $63.2m in taxes to the state, a 10.6% decrease year-over-year.

During the month of January, contributions to the Education Trust Fund fell by 11.2% when compared to the amount the fund received in January 2023. Contributions made last month totaled $45.6m.

Part of Maryland’s casino gaming revenue is used to support communities near the casinos, as well as to support the state’s horseracing industry and businesses owned by women and minorities.

In other state news, Maryland is gearing up to consider expanding its regulated gaming market to include online gambling.

Online gaming has been on the radar for the past several months. The Maryland Lottery and Gaming Control Agency has studied the effect online gaming could have on the state.
