Casino workers in Detroit to strike if agreement can’t be reached

There is a deadline of noon on Tuesday for a contract to be settled or over 3,000 workers will walk off their jobs.

The proposed strike is due to impact the MotorCity Casino Hotel, the MGM Grand Detroit and the Hollywood Casino at Greektown, with casino operations likely to be stopped completely during the period of the strike.

Dealers, food/beverage workers and cleaning staff are some of the workers who are due to take part in the strike, with potentially 3,000 workers involved.

The unions representing the workers are looking to get better pay in the face of the current cost of living crisis. 

Improved healthcare benefits and guarantees over the protection of jobs, especially in the face of new technologies, are also areas which the reported five unions are looking to make agreements over. 

Last month saw 95% of hospitality union workers vote in favor of a proposal for a potential strike, with the contracts of the affected staff members expiring in mid-September.

A MotorCity Casino Hotel spokesperson commented on the situation:

“While significant progress has been made, we have not yet reached an agreement with the Detroit Casino Council. We remain committed to bargaining in good faith and achieving a contract that is fair to our employees and allows our company to remain competitive in our industry.”
