Nevada’s Grand Sierra Resort unveils $1bn capital investment plan

The resort plans to build a 300,000 square-foot entertainment and sports arena.

Nevada’s Grand Sierra Resort (GSR) in Reno has released details of a $1bn capital investment plan that will span over the next 10 years. The destination said it plans to invest the funds into its 140-acre property.

The resort has released renderings for the upgraded space that include an enhanced arena that can accommodate a variety of events including concerts, basketball games, as well as games for other sports. Once completed, the arena will have a 10,000-person seating capacity and close to 300,000 square feet of usable space.

GSR Owner Alex Merulo said regarding the project, “The vision is to transform GSR into a destination where community, sports and entertainment come together.

“The precipice of an extraordinary transformation is upon us. This will not only redefine Grand Sierra Resort but also elevate Reno to new heights in the realm of entertainment and sports. We recognize and value the community’s support and enthusiasm as we commence this journey together.”

Along with the upcoming renovation, Merulo and the University of Nevada’s President, Brian Sandoval revealed that they will “explore a partnership” with the Nevada men’s basketball team.

Sandoval expressed his enthusiasm toward the collaboration and described the partnership as a mutual win.

He commented, “The University of Nevada, Reno is excited to explore the opportunity to partner with Alex Meruelo and Grand Sierra Resort as they develop a state-of-the-art arena and entertainment district that is unprecedented in Northern Nevada. 

“The new arena will include amenities that create a fan and game experience that are second to none.”
