Mohegan Sun casino to announce layoffs in September

Mohegan Sun will lay off an undetermined number of employees at the end of September after its furlough scheme comes to an end.
The company furloughed the majority of its workforce in mid-March as the COVID-19 pandemic caused the closure of the Connecticut casino. That furlough program is ending on Sep 30.
Mohegan Sun has returned 3,828 of its employees to work after reopening its casino on June 1. This represents around 75% of all furloughed employees.
The casino operator said the end of its furlough program would reduce the company’s workforce among those who had not yet been called back to work. Despite this, the company said it is working with employees to designate new roles and avoid layoffs.
In a statement reported by NBC Connecticut, Mohegan Sun president and general manager Jeff Hamilton commented on the end of the furlough scheme. He said: “The difficult decision came after careful consideration and was driven by the unprecedented circumstances created by the pandemic, including reduced capacity and the inability to open all of the property amenities.”
