AGA, President Biden pay tribute to “great leader” Harry Reid after Senator’s death
The politician played a key role in the Democratic Party for over 40 years.
Harry Reid, the former Senate Majority Leader, has died at the age of 82 following a prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer. After the passing of this juggernaut of US politics, a number of high-profile individuals have paid tribute to his life and achievements, including President of the American Gaming Association, Bill Miller.
“From his days as Chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission to tenure as Majority Leader, Senator Reid’s impact on Nevada and the gaming industry is unparalleled. He was the ultimate gaming champion,” Miller said.
“I’m grateful for having known the Senator throughout my career in Washington DC. Without a shadow of a doubt, Senator Reid was one of the sharpest, most effective political minds to ever enter the arena. On behalf of the AGA, our condolences to his wife, family and friends. May his memory be a blessing.”
Reid, who led the Senate for 12 years, is famed for his support of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act. The former President described him as a “great leader.”
Speaking on Reid’s passing, President Biden said: “A son of Searchlight, Nevada, Harry never forgot his humble roots. A boxer, he never gave up a fight. A great American, he looked at challenges and believed it was within our capacity to do good — to do right. May God bless Harry Reid, a dear friend and a giant of our history.”
Obama, who had been asked to provide a statement by Reid’s wife, went on to say: “I wouldn’t have been President had it not been for your encouragement and support, and I wouldn’t have gotten most of what I got done without your skill and determination. Most of all, you’ve been a good friend.”
