Brazil: No surprises as another influencer is under scrutiny over illegal raffles

Brazilian influencer João Vítor Almeida Pereira, known online as Vitor Mídia, publicly responded after becoming a target in the second phase of an investigation led by the Civil and Military Police in Parnaíba, Piauí, Brazil. 

The operation focuses on an alleged scheme involving clandestine raffles and the promotion of illegal betting platforms, an activity authorities say has moved at least BR5m ($927,860) in recent years.

Shortly after the police action, the influencer released a statement on social media rejecting any wrongdoing. 

“I’m sure this will be clarified as soon as possible and we are willing to contribute to that,” he said.

Police reports state that his three Instagram profiles, with about 188,000 followers, have been used predominantly to promote raffles classified as irregular and to advertise links to unlicensed betting sites. 

These practices, according to investigators, have intensified in the region as online gambling content continues to proliferate across Brazil.

In an official note, his legal team argued that all raffles promoted on his platforms are lawful and backed by Baixada Lottery, allegedly responsible for issuing the necessary authorizations. 

The defence maintains that the prizes offered operate “in full compliance with the law” and are audited, taxed and regularly paid out to winners.

The investigation, however, remains ongoing as authorities examine whether the raffles and betting promotions align with national regulations governing gambling, capitalization products and consumer protection.

The operation continues to target social-media-driven schemes, reflecting a crackdown across Brazil on influencers who keep on promoting unlicensed gaming activities.
