Buenos Aires trains 300 police cadets on online betting risks

Lotería de la Ciudad, the municipal lottery operator of Buenos Aires, has trained over 300 final-year cadets from the City Police’s Higher Institute of Public Security (ISSP) on the risks associated with online betting and problem gambling.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to combat illegal gambling operations and protect vulnerable populations, particularly minors.
The training session covered clandestine betting operations, detection methods through social media platforms and conflicts arising from online gambling. The program emphasized a preventive approach and provided guidance on how police officers can support individuals affected by gambling-related issues.
Cadets received instruction on identifying, preventing and responding to inappropriate gambling-related behaviors, as well as recognizing situations of vulnerability involving underage individuals. The training equipped future officers with practical tools to address gambling-related incidents during field operations.
Jesús Acevedo, President of Lotería de la Ciudad, continues to collaborate with various Buenos Aires City Government agencies to prevent problem gambling among minors. The operator has reinforced its commitment to education, awareness and responsible gambling promotion in response to the risks posed by online betting platforms.
Recent initiatives include the relaunch of the awareness campaign “Hablar es Ganar” (To speak is to win), blocking illegal sites from public schools and the BA WIFI network, and filing criminal complaints against illegal gambling operators. In addition, Acevedo recently addressed youth gambling risks at LAPSYCONF, an international mental health conference in Buenos Aires.
According to Acevedo, the training represents a proactive approach to law enforcement preparation, integrating gambling regulation awareness into police academy curriculum. By equipping cadets with specialized knowledge before they begin active duty, authorities aim to improve early detection of illegal operations and enhance protection measures for at-risk populations.
